“Black women don’t get as much media attention when they’re shot and killed. They don’t get trending Twitter hashtags; they don’t get Facebook posts dedicated to them, they don’t get whole Facebook pages dedicated to them.”-Naomi Wadler, 11

The statement”age is just a number” seems true after listening to the impactful message of an 11-year-old-girl Naomi Wadler. Her video had gone viral before she entered middle school.

On March 24, an 11-year-old, fifth-grader girl mesmerized thousands of audience in March For Our Lives in Washington D.C with her impeccable speech.

As the little girl came on stage and started her speech, it was hard to believe that she is just 11. She is wise beyond her years, and she showed up it with her eloquence.

If you happened to be there, you would agree that perhaps she is one of the next great changemakers.

She spoke determinedly about the lack of sustained media attention that women and girls of color receive when impacted by gun violence.

The three-minute speech of Naomi

She started her speech by declaring: “I represent the African-American women who are victims of gun violence, who are simply statistics instead of vibrant, beautiful girls full of potential,” she said. “I am here to say Never Again for those girls too.”

Her statement was responded with wild cheering and applause.

She had a special message for adults. She said it’s for adults to check, step back and listen to young people.  She added that the young generation sees the world through a different set of eyes.

While sharing her thoughts, she said kids must be educated on today’s issues and shouldn’t be kept in a bubble.

At the end of her speech, she urged everyone who hears her voice to join her in telling the stories that aren’t told. She urged to honor women of color who are being killed at disproportionate rates in this nation. She requested everyone to help her write the narrative for this world and understand so that such women and girls are never forgotten.

An Incredibly Poised Girl

Wadler first made headlines for her walkout with classmate Carter Anderson at their elementary school in Alexandria to honor the 17 victims shot dead at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school shooting incidence.

The two decided to add an extra minute as a tribute to an African American teenager, Courtlin Arrington who shot dead at her high school in Alabama in early March.

Well, there is no doubt that this kid is certainly extraordinary. It seems like the world has found its future leader and undoubtedly everyone will look forward to it.

And here I am, twenty, and I’m failing at my speech class. Can this girl do my speeches for me? I need to get an A.

It’s sad that adults are not aware of these situations and that children who are depend on them to try and make a change.
