Disney Pixar again delighted hearts by releasing a teaser for “Bao,” a short and cute story of a little giggly dumpling boy.

What if a cute little dumpling baby can actually babble, giggle and even sneeze?

Sounds fun?

Maybe this is something that evoked curiosity in the mind of director Domee Shi, and she portrayed it in her next animated short “Bao.”

The CGI animated short conveys a heart-warming tale of an empty-nesting Chinese mom and a tiny dumpling that sprouts limbs and a torso, turning into a baby.

The 30-second clip…

The clip starts with a woman sitting at a table staring dumbstruck at the dumpling.

She clambers onto her dining table and sees a dumpling with cute facial features sitting on a leaf in its steamer.

It cries and sneezes, and suddenly its two legs pop out of the bottom.  It even gets a torso and a pair of arms after a bit of shaking.

The woman gently lifts up the adorable dumpling-baby in her hands and smiles at it as it begins to laugh. She excitedly welcomes this adorable baby into her life but soon realizes the bittersweet truth that nothing stays cute and small forever,

This was the 30-second trailer for “Bao” that is soon to release in movie theaters ahead of Incredibles.

The Chinese First Female Short Director

Domee Shi, the by Pixar storyboard artist directed Bao inspired by her personal story.  She says, her mom would treat her like a precious little dumpling.

And this inspired her to create this magical, modern-day fairy tale which made her the first ever female short director in the studio’s history.

To sum up…

The sweet and simple story beautifully conveys how aging and lonely Chinese mother with empty nest syndrome gets an unexpected second chance at motherhood when a dumpling made by her comes to life.

Along with an emotional dose of mother-child bonding, the story also evokes nostalgia with cultural markings of Chinese families. The hanging scroll calendar and traditional red bowls add up a flavor of Chinese culture.

The word ‘bao’ actually has two meanings in Chinese, a steamed bun and something precious or treasure and the short film uses both of the meanings.

Yeah, it looks really cute, but I’m mostly interested in what kind of plot and storyline it will have. What can you do with dumplings?
