A Letter From Non-drinkers to Drinkers

It seems like there is no such thing as a party without drinking today. And going out…you would probably drink something, right? Well, to be honest, it became completely normal to have a few drinks when you are with your friends. But, what if you have some friends that don’t drink alcohol at all, how should you behave with them? Are they boring to you? Let’s see what nondrinkers want drinkers to know!

1.Check-splitting. Auch, this is a very hard topic to discuss, but yet, here we are. How much do you think about that? Do you just split that check with your nondrinking friend to 50-50? Okay, you are in the restaurant. Well, you definitely need to know a fact that restaurants make more than 30 percent of their revenue from alcohol. So, be sure that your nondrinking friend doesn’t pay for what you have drunk that evening.

2.Support. Many people think how people who don’t drink don’t have any problems with alcohol. Well, they actually have! Why do they have some problems? Because everyone around them is drinking all the time! So, yes, these people also need much support. Remember that buddy from your 7th grade that refused to drink? Do you remember how much fun your ‘crew’ has made out of him? I hope that you understand the point now.

3.Taking care. If you are happy because your friend doesn’t drink, thinking how she or he will take care of you if you ‘cross the line’, then you should definitely forget about that. Your nondrinking friend has also gone out to relax and enjoy, and not to take care of you. What about driving? You cannot drive when you drink, right? No problem, your nondrinking friend will drive! Absolutely wrong. Understand them. It is their choice like you have made yours.

4.Not so fun. If you realize how your friend stopped going out with you because you drink too much, then you should talk with him or her honestly. Don’t be angry if they don’t feel good about many drunk people around them. Maybe you can do some other activities together? Do you like cycling for example? How about a morning coffee? Don’t lose a friend just because of alcohol.

So, here we are. These facts are absolutely true, and they made me think a lot too. Maybe the next time I go out I will think in a different way about my nondrinking friends, and I hope that you will too!

Drinkers forced me to drink from how bad I feel to not to. I sometimes feel horrible because of it.
