Should kids be paid for doing chores?

When it comes to debating about children and parenting, it is almost impossible to be absolutely right. Every child is different, and every parent is different, so many strategies that work for some child may not work on the other and so on. In this topic, we will discuss paying your children for doing chores. We have asked the experts about their opinion, and of course (and it doesn’t surprise me), there are two different opinions. So, let’s see what suits your parenting better!

Are there any benefits when it comes to giving your children chores? The experts agree how this is a great way to teach your children to take care of themselves and to learn how to work and complete their obligations while they are still young. I totally agree with this fact. But, what about the money? Should children be paid for doing chores?

Don’t pay your kids for doing chores. This is what one side of the experts’ claims. Why do they claim how this is the better way when it comes to teaching your children values? Well, they agree how the allowances must be completely separate. They claim how if you give your child some money, he or she will think how every time they clean up their room they need to get a reward. Why should they get a reward when it is completely normal to teach children how they should keep their room tidy and how they should care for their personal things? This is also a good point of view, and I cannot say that I do not agree with all these facts. Money-Smart Kids author also agrees with this and claims how parents already buy children everything they need or want. You know how it goes, some special occasions, birthdays, and so on.

Pay them, so they can learn how to manage their own money. This is also a great point of view. If you do not give your children money, they may end up growing up and not knowing how to manage their money by themselves. So, the best advice here would definitely be to pay them for doing chores, but not much. Let it be just something for a little treat (like chocolate, for example). A personal finance expert claims how this is a perfect way to teach your children how to handle life when they grow up, and besides that, he also believes for paying kids for chores would be the best way to start with their money management from the early days.

I just think it’s too much. I don’t want to overwork my children.

Each parents should do what they think is best. Both sides have a point and they should just work how they wish.

I give my kids incentives, such as an ice cream trip if everyone gets all of the chores done on time. It encourages them to work together, as well teaches them time management. Seems to be working so far!

I wish I would have been paid to do my chores as a kid…but then I don’t want to pay my own kids.
