What should you learn from Anthony Bourdain?

The news of Anthony Bourdain hit us all pretty hard. He was just one of those people who was always shining, even when he was sitting alone at the bar of his favorite dark Chicago bar. He lived his whole life by his own rules. He explored the whole planet like a real cowboy. He truly led his life in a way that everyone admired– no BS, put it all out there, and just genuine. Before he passed, he was interviewed in an old school German restaurant in NYC on how to become a better traveler.

“Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you.”

Here are a few of our favorite moments, and ways that Anthony Bourdain changed us.

His honesty. There are also some people who don’t like this man because he is too honest and has been living a reckless life. But he was also an admitted homebody– he loved the feeling of doing laundry at home.

His openness. You can become a better traveler if you completely open your heart to new opportunities. You can also become a better traveler if you get out of your comfort zone, and it doesn’t matter how much it frightens you. Once you ‘climb that mountain’, you are finally free to live as a complete human being!

His brashness. Bourdain, on more than one occasion, was very critical of Guy Fieri. While I’m not the biggest Fieri fan myself, it wasn’t the words that Anthony used to “rip” on Guy that I liked–it was why he seemed not to care for the man. Bourdain lived his life trying new things, and working to experience other cultures–and he wanted the same for others. Fieri’s restaurant in Times Square contradicts that believe, and Bourdain made that well known. So while the opinion may not have been popular, he was upfront about it and spoke about it often.

His willingness to be a champion for others. When “Me Too” first happened, Bourdain was one of the first famous men who came out as an ally. His relationship with Asia Argento sparked this, but his comments on the movement proved that he truly was using his voice to help others.

“I’ve been hearing a lot of really bad shit, frankly, and in many cases it’s like, wow, I’ve known some of these women and I’ve known women who’ve had stories like this for years and they’ve said nothing to me. What is wrong with me? What have I, how have I presented myself in such a way as to not give confidence, or why was I not the sort of person people would see as a natural ally here? So I started looking at that.”

His need for adventure.

Be open to all the endless opportunities you can get from your perfect life. Every life is perfect, that is what Anthony always appreciated-people and their differences.

A one of a kind person that should be more common in the world. It just won’t be the same in the travel and food world.
