There are many different types of plants out there…you don’t need to be a botanist to understand what they all do. In fact a lot of the houseplants you pick up provide a variety of benefits that are wonderful to have around the house.

Some of them help in purifying the air you breathe, some are linked to therapeutic benefits, and there are even low-maintenance plants that are suitable for your own lifestyle too. In the end, scientists have proven through their research that having even the simplest houseplant can do wonders for you.

Here’s a handful of the houseplants that not only are helpful for the air but, but have additional benefits depending on how you care for them.

Golden pothos: This particular plant isn’t the greatest in removing formaldehyde, but it can remove other harmful chemicals in the air like benzene and trichloromethyl. These plants are also incredibly difficult to kill so they’re a great starting plant for people to look after. They can handle low-light conditions and can also get by if you water them irregularly.

Peace lilies: Unlike the golden pothos, these lilies can remove formaldehyde amongst other chemicals. Formaldehyde is found when using cleaning products, which isn’t the best for you. What’s also interesting about this plant is this is one of the few plants out there that can bloom while indoors. All you need to do with this plant is placed near a window and make sure it’s getting indirect light from it. With watering make sure you only water when the soil is dry and try not to over-water it.

Garden mums: These inexpensive flowers also remove formaldehyde, benzene, ammonia, and xylene from the air. They also add color to any decor. For care, they need bright and filtered light so place them near a window. You want to water them while the soil is dry to the touch, however, the plant isn’t wilted.

English Ivy: One of the best air-filtering houseplants that removes formaldehyde like a champ. It’s great for people who are particularly sensitive to smoke as well. Ivy works best when you place it in indirect light. You want to avoid the plant drying out on you.

Ferns: Another easy to grow a plant, ferns boost the air humidity. This increase in moisture prevents air (and your skin) from getting too dry. Keep ferns in indirect light and water. You want the soil wet but never soggy.

Bromeliads: Blooms in three different shades of red, yellow and pink, they filter benzene and can absorb roughly 90% of the chemical in the air. Like the garden mums, these plants love bright and sunny places. The only thing to be careful with this one is to not over-water it. This plant is known to hold out through droughts.

Snake plant: Ideal for a bedroom, this plant removes our two big culprits – benzene and formaldehyde. It can also absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen at night. All you have to do is have it soak up indirect light and make sure the soil is dry when you water it.

Philodendron: This plant is a plant that can last for several years. It’s great at absorbing xylene which you can find in paint thinner as well as gasoline. You’ll need to use a moderate amount of water for this one and make sure it gets some sunlight too.

Spider plant: Any type of spider plant is a good combatant against pollutants. Take for example the Chlorophytum comosum, a type of spider plant that can absorb about 90% of formaldehyde but also carbon monoxide. Those two chemicals can be found in cigarette smoke. All you have to do is keep this plant in indirect light and water it once per week.

Bamboo plant: Bamboo is more than a lucky plant. It can actually remove a lot of the chemicals that we have listed above. It’s a great plant to have around the house. All you have to do is keep it in indirect sunlight and make sure you change the water once every week.

I’m just getting into gardening, with having a terrace in the city, and this is just the simplicity I needed to read first.
