Your Skin Type Could Explain Every Skincare Problem You Have

With numerous skincare products available on the market, one could easily get lost in the forest of options available. The importance of knowing your skin type was emphasized by Kimberly Bates, a licensed esthetician, who pointed out that it could help reduce skin aging and promote the overall health of the skin, helping you achieve your skin care goals with the right skin care regimen.

Your genetics can influence your skin type to some extent. Other factors include hormones, use of the wrong skin care product, seasonal changes, factors attributed to your lifestyle like stress, sleeping patterns, smoking among others.

There are two main skin types, oily and dry, the combination of both can actually be identified by specific traits. The best way to determine your skin type is to check how it feels when devoid of moisturizers or facial lotions.

According to Bates and Sonya Dakar, oily skin is characterized by the presence of large pores, the residue of grease on the skin surface and a shining T-zone (areas on the head that include the forehead, nose, and chin). For those with this skin type, it is best to stay away from stripping and dehydrating products that have sulfates foaming agents contained within because they stimulate the oil glands to produce more oil. Bates recommends moisturizers that are oil-free and sunscreens. Dakar added that adding healthy oils like omega-rich flaxseed oil can balance the oil content on your skin.

For dry skin type, symptoms like itchiness, flaking, cracking, bleeding, rough patches or peeling of the skin around the nose exist. Go for oil cleansers instead of foaming cleansers and get products with resveratrol, grape seed oil, and antioxidants contained within them. Also, use lukewarm water rather than hot water to wash your face. Always moisturize and steer clear of habits that can cause your skin to dry out.

For those with a combination of both oily and dry skin, major symptoms are dry skin with an oily T-zone. For a skin care regimen, Bates suggests making use of two moisturizers; one free from oils for the oily regions and a gentler one for the dry areas or look for one that suits both. Moisturize your oily region with a salicylic acid scrub at least once or twice a week.

According to Dakar, think of normal skin as the skin goals we all aspire to have. However, it can be maintained with proper cleaning and moisturizing, protecting your skin from the sun and avoiding other stressors that can affect your skin wellness.

Despite the skin types discussed, other popular skin concerns can be experienced and they include; sensitive skin (can be treated by using a detergent-free cleaner, sunscreen, and avoidance of products with fragrance. Keep eliminating products until you find the best for you); dehydrated skin which occurs from lack of water in your epidermis (use a facial oil, hyaluronic acid serum and a particle-free gel exfoliator); skin prone to acne (use gentle exfoliator and a soothing cleanser); and aging skin (use a sunscreen, retinol or an antioxidant serum).

This was better finding out than reading labels in the pharmacy.
