The best type of dog to have when you live in the city

Not every dog out there is meant to live in the city. Depending on the breed some are fit for the city, while others may require large homes out in the suburbs where they can roam outside. Because of that, it’s difficult for a lot of dog lovers out there to pick which dog is fitting for the lifestyle they have. As such we’ve put together a small list that is perfect for those who live in the city.

The first on our list is the Norfolk Terrier. This breed of dog is easy going, incredibly energetic, and well-mannered as well. To describe it best, the Norfolk Terrier is a loyal, lively, and spunky herding dog. They adapt quickly to various environments and also have quite the durable coats of fur as well. As a result, this dog is perfect for any city anywhere you want to go. What’s even better is that this dog is also compatible with many other dogs out there, making it great for families and dog-owners who are social. The only real downside to all of this is while their coats make them adaptable to various weather conditions, there is a lot of grooming that is needed.

The second on the list is the pug. Pugs are friendly, spunky as well as playful. They are well known for their need to sleep by their owner’s feet and enjoy getting a lot of attention in exchange for their loyalty. They are barkers by nature, however, their barks are a lot bigger than bites. As for lifestyle, these dogs are quite the eaters and because their bodies are so small, they’ll need a lot of exercise in order to control that weight. What’s also really nice is that because their fur is so short, they don’t shed a whole lot and grooming them is easier. Word of warning though, if you need a loyal watchdog, a Pug isn’t the answer as they are generally friendly towards everyone regardless of if you know them or not.

Third on the list is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. From the famous Disney movie Lady and the Tramp along with the popular TV show Sex and the City, it’s clear why this dog is quite the popular one. Setting aside those things, this breed of Spaniel is a loyal, gentle, and friendly pet that you can see in many family homes. This breed of dog loves lounging around just as much as getting out and exercising. This is the ideal dog for people living in apartments.

The fourth dog we have is the Shih-Tzu. This loyal, loving, and prized Chinese breed is also another popular dog for apartment-dwellers. They don’t require a lot of activity but also enjoy getting pampered and shown love by their masters. While Shih-Tzus are brave and defiant by nature (Shih Tzu translates to lion), they are pretty trusting towards all humans. They also have a stable temperament as well making them fitting dogs for families, but not so much as a watchdog. What is also important to note is that the Shih-Tzu does have long hair making the shedding season a nightmare on top of the frequent grooming that they’ll need.

Of course, there are other dogs out there you can consider, as well such as the Labrador Retriever, the Miniature Pinscher, the Dachshund, among others too. The important thing is finding the right dog that you can enjoy but can also fit into your lifestyle as well.

I’m moving in winter to Chicago and worry how my golden retriever will adjust. Sorry, but he’s coming and I won’t change him for nothing.

These are very good and beautiful dogs. I wish I could have other big dogs, but these are good enough.
