‘Elvis’

While this movie didn’t make quite as much money at the box office as some of the others on this list, Elvis received high ratings and was the best-selling biographical movie of the year. The movie shows rock ‘n roll superstar Elvis Presley, played by Austin Butler, and his rise to fame through complicated relationships with his family and with his manager, played by Tom Hanks.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’

Top Gun: Maverick has the honor of being both the highest-grossing movie of the year and one of the highest-rated by both professional critics and casual fans. This sequel to the 1986 classic Top Gun stars Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Benjamin, and more.

The film’s box office release grossed over $700 million domestically and nearly $2 billion, so Top Gun: Maverick is currently holding a spot as the eleventh highest-grossing movie of all time. The movie was the highest-rated movie of the year on IMDB and got scores of 96% and 98% from critics and casual fans, respectively, on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

‘Nope’

Director Jordan Peele is quickly taking his place as one of the premier horror film directors in Hollywood, and his latest movie Nope was another huge success. Grossing over $123 million domestically, this sci-fi horror movie stars Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer as two siblings who run a horse ranch and work with a videographer to try to catch proof of a UFO.

Nope scored very well among critics, receiving an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 77 out of 100 from review aggregator Metacritic. 

‘The Northman’

The Northman is an epic action film and revenge thriller based on the Scandinavian legend of Amleth, a Viking prince who was the direct inspiration for William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. “The Northman,” played by Alexander Skarsgård, goes on a quest to avenge his dead father and take his rightful place as king.

This movie was another relatively less known one and grossed $35 million, but it was a huge success among fans and especially professional critics, receiving an 82 out of 100 score on Metacritic and an impressive 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
