The Golden Globes are one of the biggest awards events in cinema, and their arrival each year shows which movies and television shows of the year were acclaimed the most by critics in the industry. From productions that everyone knew were the most popular of the year to a few surprise picks, here are the films and television series that won big at the Golden Globes this year.
The Fabelmans – Motion Picture – Drama
A big winner across several categories was The Fabelmans, a coming-of-age drama film directed by Steven Spielberg. It’s no surprise to see a Spielberg film nominated for and winning Golden Globe awards, as with this year’s awards, he’s now been nominated for 27 total Golden Globes for 15 different films and won nine of them.
The Fabelmans, a semi-autobiographical story about Spielberg’s beginning as a director, won awards for Best Motion Picture in the drama category, as well as Best Director. Additionally, for their work on the film, actress Michelle Williams was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress, Spielberg and writer Tony Kushner were nominated for Best Screenplay, and John Williams was nominated for Best Original Score.
The Banshees of Inisherin – Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
Another film that won big this year was The Banshees of Inisherin, a dark comedy about two lifelong friends whose friendship sees some rocky times after one decides to abruptly end things. This film won an award for Best Motion Picture in the musical or comedy genre, and actor Colin Farrell won an award for Best Performance by an Actor for his work on the film. Additionally, writer Martin McDonagh won an award for Best Screenplay for his work on the film.
House of the Dragon – Television Series – Drama
HBO’s television series House of the Dragon has been hugely popular this year, not surprising considering the success of its predecessor Game of Thrones. The series won a Golden Globe this year for Best Television Series in the drama category, and actress Emma D’Arcy was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress.
Abbott Elementary – Television Series – Musical or Comedy
The hit sitcom Abbott Elementary entered its second season in 2022 and was rewarded this year with an award for Best Television Series in the musical or comedy genre. Additionally, actor Tyler James Williams won Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for his role as teacher Gregory Eddie in the series.
The White Lotus – Made for TV
As for limited series and other “Made for TV” productions, it’s no surprise that this year’s winner was The White Lotus. This comedy-drama, which depicts the guests and employees of the White Lotus resort chain, is now averaging nearly 10 million viewers per episode. The White Lotus and its actors impressively won two awards this year, including Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television and, for actress Jennifer Coolidge, Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role.
