The MTV Movie & TV Awards is one of the most respected and anticipated awards shows every year, and this year is no different. Amid conflicts in the film industry due to the recent Writers Guild strike, the pre-recorded show took a different format than usual but still delivered on what MTV voted to be the best movies and TV shows and performances of the year. Read on to find out what they decided.

Winners

The winners of this year’s awards were announced during the pre-recorded show. The winners for the 2023 Movie & TV Awards included:

Best Movie:

“Scream VI”, the latest installment in the popular film series that began in 1996, won the MTV Movie & TV Awards’ “Best Movie” award this year. This has already been one of the most successful movies of the franchise and is the first one to gross over $100 million in the domestic box office since “Scream 2” in 1997.

Best Show

The “Best Show” of the year according to MTV was “The Last of Us,” the post-apocalyptic drama from HBO. The series has already been lauded as potentially the best-ever TV adaptation of a video game, and each episode has averaged over 30 million viewers on HBO Max.

Best Performance in a Movie

For “Best Performance in a Movie,” it’s no surprise that this year’s award goes to actor Tom Cruise for his work in “Top Gun: Maverick.” The film impressively scored a 96% critic rating and a 99% audience rating on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, making it the highest-rated movie of 2022, in part thanks to Cruise’s performance in the lead role.

Best Performance in a Show

In the “Best Performance in a Show” category, it’s again no surprise that this year’s winner was Jenna Ortega for her performance in “Wednesday.” This popular show has been clearly helped along by Ortega’s popularity both on and off stage and was also a nominee in the “Best Show” category.

Best Hero

Another award for “The Last of Us” goes to Pedro Pascal, who played the series’ protagonist Joel. In the show, the hardened survivor Joel is tasked to smuggle across the country a teen girl named Ellie, who proves to be immune to the fungal infection causing a worldwide pandemic. Pascal and Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie, also won the show’s award for “Best Duo.”

Best Villain

For the “Best Villain” category, MTV’s choice was Elizabeth Olsen for her portrayal of Wanda Maximoff in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Olsen, who has played the character as a hero in previous Marvel films, did a fantastic job of showing a different side of the Scarlet Witch.

Why is the Writer’s Guild on strike?

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike on May 1st, 2023 after negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) broke down over issues such as streaming residuals and workplace safety.

This year’s Movie & TV Awards was originally planned to be held as an in-person award ceremony located at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, but due to the writers’ strike, celebrities refused to attend the ceremony. As a result, the MTV Movie & TV Awards 2023 was a pre-recorded show. Actress Drew Barrymore was initially set to host the event but opted not to out of solidarity with the Writer’s Guild strike.
