Saturday Night Live is one of the longest-running and highest-rated TV shows of all time, in some part thanks to the celebrity guest hosts and talented musical guests that appear on the show each week. This year’s SNL lineup has started strong, so read on below for some of the recent and upcoming SNL hosts and musical guests in 2023.
How does SNL work?
Each episode of SNL is hosted by a celebrity who delivers a monologue and then performs in comedy sketches with the show’s cast. Each episode also features several performances from a special musical guest. The celebrity host and musical guest are typically chosen from celebrities or artists who have received media attention recently for their endeavors.

Host: Aubrey Plaza
Musical guest: Sam Smith
The first SNL episode of the year was on January 21, and featured actress Aubrey Plaza for her first time guest hosting. Plaza had a huge year in 2022 with her performance in the hit TV series The White Lotus and her starring role in the film Emily the Criminal.
The musical guest for this episode was returning star Sam Smith, who has performed on SNL twice before. Smith played the song “Unholy,” as well as the song “Gloria” from the album of the same name.

Host: Michael B. Jordan
Musical guest: Lil Baby
In the week following Plaza and Smith’s appearance on SNL, actor Michael B. Jordan and rapper Lil Baby took the stage. As popular as Jordan has become over the last few years, he surprisingly hadn’t hosted SNL before now. Jordan, who was named People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2020, talked about his dating life after his recent breakup with model Lori Harvey. Jordan joked that he was joining the dating app Raya.
Alongside Jordan was a performance from Grammy award-winning singer and rapper Lil Baby, who performed his songs “California Breeze” and “Forever.” With Lil Baby in his second song was Chloe Flower on piano and Fridayy on chorus vocals.

Host: Pedro Pascal
Musical guest: Coldplay
The next guest host on Saturday Night Live will be actor Pedro Pascal, who is slated to host the show’s 942nd episode on February 4th. Pascal has become one of the most-talked-about actors in the world in recent years, and has even been called “the new Harrison Ford.” Pascal gained fame initially from his portrayal of the “Red Viper” Oberyn Martell in HBO’s Game of Thrones. Since then, he’s been in lead roles in the television shows Narcos, The Mandalorian, and The Last of Us.
Following Pascal’s monologue will be a performance from Coldplay, one of the best-selling music groups of all time. Coldplay must be comfortable performing on SNL at this point, as this will be the band’s seventh time appearing on the show. Coldplay will most likely be performing at least one of their 2022 singles, “People of the Pride,” “Biutyful,” or “Humankind.” The band has said that their new album Moon Music is nearly finished.
