The Kardashian sisters are no strangers to gossip. Among the recent Kardashian rumors are that Khloe is dating Scott Disick, Kylie Jenner (half-sister to all the Kardashians) was checking out Jennifer Lopez at the Met Gala, and Kourtney Kardashian has rekindled her relationship with Younes Bendjima. However, none of these rumors is quite as ridiculous as the one currently swirling around the family’s most famous member, Kim Kardashian.
Specifically, the Met Gala didn’t ignite rumors for just Kylie Jenner. At this yearly fashion event and fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, celebrities don stunning looks related to the gala’s theme. For this year’s theme, Camp: Notes on Fashion, Kim Kardashian wore a nearly transparent Mugler dress from which crystals hung like tiny pendulums. Inspired by the 1957 film Boy on a Dolphin, Kardashian’s dress gave the impression that she was still dripping dry from a dip in the ocean.
Although many have debated whether her dress qualifies as “camp,” people seem to agree on one thing: Kardashian’s waistline looked unnaturally small in the dress. Some people are taking this notion a step further and suspecting that Kardashian actually had her ribs removed to fit into her Met Gala dress.
When Kardashian posted a photo of her dress to her Instagram, commenters were quick to make bold accusations. On one comment thread, a follower saying “waist goals” launched a conversation about plastic surgery, in which another follower eventually said, “It’s called getting your ribs removed.” Thereafter, commenters claimed that no diet or workout regimen could ever lead to a body shape similar to Kim Kardashian’s.
Rumors about Kardashian’s rib removal began swirling so intensely that her personal trainer stepped in to offer some insight. Melissa Alcantara, who appears often on Kardashian’s Instagram and Snapchat stories as well as her much-watched reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians, shed some light on Kardashian’s lifestyle and dress choice the day after the Met Gala. Alcantara admitted that Kardashian did indeed wear a corset under her dress to make her waistline appear smaller, but she also stressed that Kardashian lives by a strict exercise regimen in which she only takes one day off per week. Alcantara remained humble in her post, claiming that all she does is pave a path for Kardashian — it’s up to the celebrity herself to walk it, and that, according to Alcantara, she does without hesitation.
Kardashian is far from the first megastar to be accused of removing her ribs. Raquel Welch, Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda, and Cher have all been on the receiving end of intense public speculation regarding their hourglass figures. Cher even had to hire a doctor to publicly confirm that all her ribs were intact inside her body, and in her 1991 fitness book, she said, “I’ve killed myself in the gym to have this body.” Although fans may think otherwise, Alcantara insists that Kardashian could say the same. Kardashian at one point shared Alcantara’s Instagram post, but she has since deleted this share, and she has yet to comment on the rumors surrounding her in any other way.
