In late July, popular singer Demi Lovato was rushed to the hospital on account of a drug overdose, throwing all her friends, family and fans into shock as she became hospitalized for several days.

However, De La Garza, Lovato’s mom has said in an interview, that she didn’t even know that Lovato had suffered from a drug overdose.

She revealed that she suddenly began to receive so many texts at the same time saying “I just heard the news. I’m so sorry. We’re all praying for your family. My thoughts are with you.

“My heart stopped and I wondered what was going on,” she said. “And before I had a chance to check the online reports, Lovato’s assistant called with the news. I was in shock and didn’t know what to say. It took like forever till I asked, ‘Is she okay?’”

Lovato however, broke her silence on social media, writing, “I now need time to heal and focus on my sobriety and road to recovery. The love you all have shown me will never be forgotten and I look forward to the day when I can say I came out of this on the other side. I will keep fighting.”

Lovato has always been open about her struggles with eating disorders, substance abuse, and bipolar disorder. She even underwent treatment in 2011, but after leaving the treatment facility, she relapsed again. However, she celebrated five years of sobriety last March.

Now much better, Lovato has been speaking with her mother about the painful days they both shared, as they promote her new book, “Falling with Wings: A Mother’s Story” which she published in March.

“I never expected to hear anything like that, as a parent, about any of my kids,” De La Garza said. “When my daughters and I went to the ER at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in LA to see Lovato, she was in bad, bad shape.”

Continuing, she said, “But I looked at her and said, ‘Demi, I love you,’ and she turned to me and said the same words, ‘I love you too.’ It was then I told myself to never think even for a second that Demi was not going to be alright.”

De La Garza remarked that very dark days and dark nights followed, on the road to recovery, as Demi’s condition remained critical for a long time.

However, she feels all the positivity and countless prayers made on Lovato’s behalf by her fans really helped her pull through, with many of her celebrity friends like Justin Timberlake and Ryan Seacrest, including her ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas taking to social media to share their support. She also lent a lot of credit to the doctors at Cedars-Sinai.

De La Garza, who is now working hard to raise public awareness about abuse of opioids, added about Lovato, “She’s doing well, she’s happy and healthy. She’s working on her sobriety and getting all the help she needs. And that, in itself, encourages me about her future, and the future of our family.”

Lovato was released from the hospital in August.
