Going into the 2019 American Music Awards (AMAs), the night’s most talked-about artist wasn’t its most nominated. Post Malone received seven nominations ahead of the event, but Taylor Swift’s ongoing AMAs controversy with Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun – respectively, the former head of her previous record label and her ex-manager – overshadowed almost all the awards hype. In the weeks leading up to the ceremony, Swift accused Borchetta and Braun of attempting to prevent her from playing most of her songs at the AMAs.
Swift nevertheless performed a career-spanning medley at the event, where she also usurped the late Michael Jackson’s record for the all-time number of AMA wins. Her now-total 28 wins (Michael Jackson won 24 awards) include five wins this year alone, the most of any artist in 2019. Khalid and BTS also dominated the night with three wins each.
