On February 3, the Golden Globes announced its 2021 nominees. On February 28, NBC will air the 78th Golden Globes at 8 p.m. ET. 2021 is historic for the Golden Globes: It’s the first time that more than one female director was nominated for best director, with three female directors nominated. However, the awards have been criticized for obvious snubs, including for Black performers.

Amidst this background, critics are starting to pick whom they expect to win. Here are some predictions on who will win at the 2021 Golden Globes.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy

Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), Elle Fanning (The Great), and Jane Levy (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist) are among the actresses nominated for this award. However, some say that this year’s winners may depend on whether the Hollywood Foreign Press (HFPA), which votes for the nominees, wants to replicate the Emmys or be different.

If the HFPA wants to follow suit, then another nominee, Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek) may win this category. If the HFPA wants to be different from the Emmys, another nominee, Kaley Cuoco, could win for her performance in Flight Attendant.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy

This year’s slate largely features stars of new shows, such as Nicholas Hoult (The Great) and Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso). This year’s nominations also include Hollywood veterans such as Don Cheadle (Black Monday) and Eugene Levy (Schitt’s Creek), as well as last year’s surprise winner, Ramy Youssef, for his titular role in Ramy

Many critics thoroughly enjoyed Sudeikis’ performance in Ted Lasso. The Globes might similarly favor Sudeikis’ performance as a midwestern Kansas football coach turned English football manager.

Best Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama

Critics say that if the HFPA wants to make a traditional Hollywood vote, then either Anthony Hopkins (The Father) or Gary Oldman (Mank) will likely win. Others say that this year may be different. The late, talented Chadwick Boseman may win for his portrayal as a young dedicated blues musician in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Boseman may posthumously get his first award, as he never won Golden Globes for his critically-acclaimed roles in Black Panther, 42, Marshall, and Get On Up

Other critics believe that Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal) might be the frontrunner. Tahar Rahim, a French actor who played a Guantánamo detainee in the true-story drama The Mauritanian, is also nominated.

Best Actress in a Motion Picture — Drama

Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday), Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman), Frances McDormand (Nomadland), and Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman) are nominated for this year’s Best Actress in a drama movie.

All five actresses have been highly acclaimed for their strong performances. However, some critics believe the HFPA will give the win to Mulligan, as Promising Young Woman is also nominated for the Best Screenplay, Best Drama, and Best Director awards.
