The original Avatar movie
The original Avatar movie became the highest-grossing film of all time shortly after its release in 2009. It was stripped of the title by Avengers: Endgame in 2019 only to regain the title in 2021, 12 years after its initial release.
Avatar is a science fiction movie set in the 22nd century when humans are colonizing a resource-rich planet called Pandora. The title of the film references a genetically engineered alien body that humans can use remotely to explore the planet and communicate with its inhabitants.
Will the sequel finally happen?
After years of waiting, Avatar 2 will be released this winter. The film will be titled Avatar: The Way of Water, and as the title suggests, it will take place primarily underwater. The production studio has filmed some footage up to seven miles deep in the ocean.
The new movie will star Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, CCH Pounder, and Sigourney Weaver in returning roles. Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet and Fear the Walking Dead’s Cliff Curtis are two high-profile additions to the cast of the new movie.
When can I watch it?
As of now, Avatar: The Way of Water is scheduled to release on December 16 of this year. While past scheduled release dates fell through because of production difficulties and a variety of other factors, director James Cameron has stated that production of the film is 100% complete.
Due to the immense popularity of the first film, the release of the sequel will likely be a major event, and you should be able to watch it in any movie theater near you.
Why hasn’t it been made yet?
This movie was originally slated to come out in 2014, so why didn’t it? Well, for starters, director James Cameron has been busy. Cameron worked as a producer for several films and starred in multiple television documentaries leading up to 2017.
Production for Avatar 2 actually started in 2017, but a combination of new technology, other large film releases, and the COVID-19 pandemic continued to push back the release date.
Will there be more Avatar movies to come?
Assuming everything goes to plan, this won’t be the last new Avatar movie we see. There are five films planned for the complete series, and if everything goes well, they will be released in December every other year. This means that after Avatar 2 is released we should be seeing new Avatar movies on December 20, 2024, December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028.
Cameron has stated that in addition to having completed producing the next movie already, he and his crew are 95% finished with Avatar 3.
