Full disclosure: I wasn’t always such a believer. In fact, for a long time, I made the mistake of not giving much thought to my bedding at all. I used whatever I had lying around, whether it was the cheap sheets I picked up in the bargain bin or the starter set I received as a graduation gift and had since washed into oblivion. Sleep for me was unsatisfying and utilitarian rather than deep and refreshing. Not to mention, it got to the point where I was embarrassed to show guests my bedroom, which looked more like a dorm room than a space befitting a hard-working professional woman.
It wasn’t until I saved up enough to finally buy my first apartment that I decided enough was enough. It was time to invest in a proper sheet set to go along with my new adult space. But when I started shopping around, I was shocked by the prices. Traditional luxury retailers, which mark up their sheets by more than 200%, were way too expensive. Direct-to-consumer startups were more affordable, but at up to $400 per sheet set, they were still out of my budget.
Enter Brooklinen. I fortuitously attended a friend’s housewarming party and was totally inspired by her bedroom. It was classic, sophisticated and completely relaxing. I assumed her bedding must have cost a fortune, so when she told me about Brooklinen, it took all my willpower not to race home for an online shopping session right then and there.
Since its launch on Kickstarter in April 2014, Brooklinen, founded by husband and wife team Rich and Vicki Fulop, has quickly made a name for itself as a trailblazer in the world of luxury bedding—and it’s easy to see why. You get the same amazing look, feel and quality of the premium brands, but at an accessible price.
I ordered the Luxe Hardcore Bundle—including a duvet cover, top sheet, fitted sheet and four pillowcases—for $228, and it was conveniently delivered right to my door. I chose the Smoke Dot duvet cover and Smoke Sheets, which turned out to be the perfect combination of elegance and whimsy—crisp white with a hint of silvery gray peeking through. When I made the bed for the first time, space was immediately transformed. It looked like a chic boutique hotel room, and I knew I would have no problems unwinding there after a long day.
It’s now been two years since I bought that first set of Brooklinen sheets and I can honestly say I’ve never slept better in my life. The sheets are so silky soft, they lull me right to sleep every night. I swear they get even more comfortable over time, and unlike the starter sheets of my early twenties, the colors have stayed just as brilliant, no matter how many times they go through the wash.
I’ve continued to be a loyal Brooklinen customer (confession: I now own a few sets in various shades and patterns!) because I love their sheets, but it doesn’t hurt that I can also get behind their values. By cutting out the middleman, they’re able to avoid markups and save consumers money. Further, they only partner with manufacturers in developed countries with free trade agreements with the U.S, ensuring all their products are responsibly crafted.
Nowadays when I entertain, I keep my bedroom door wide open because I want to show it off. My friends never fail to ooh and aah over my gorgeous bedding, and then proceed to gripe about their own lackluster sheets. I tell them how a simple sheet upgrade can change their lives (no exaggeration!), and that if they want a great value on luxury bedding to look no further than Brooklinen.
Personally, I recommend the Luxe Hardcore Bundle because it’s a fantastic value and I like getting everything I need in one package. But everyone is different, so depending on your sleep style and/or budget, you might prefer to go for the Classic Hardcore Sheet Bundle for $179.25, or to simply buy a new duvet cover or pillowcases a la carte.
Seeing what a positive difference these sheets have made in my life, I’m happy to support a company that makes high-quality bedding more accessible to the average consumer. I want everyone to experience this bliss!
