As we get older there are many things that we need to be concerned with regards to our health. One of the biggest concerns is managing our own weight as it gets harder as we get older to lose weight at a quick pace. Of course to counter that we need to be mindful of the medicine that we are taking as well as the amount of exercise we are doing as well. But more importantly than all of that is the food that we eat.

With this in mind, here are some foods that will improve our overall health. Furthermore, if we avoid certain foods too this’ll also improve our health as adults.

Generally speaking the best types of foods we should be eating are foods with a lot of nutrients in them. Foods with various vitamins, dietary fiber, and minerals are only going to help us be healthier in the long run. With this in mind, a good portion of your diet that’ll help you out long term will be a mixture of colorful vegetables and fruits. For vegetables, you can opt for dark leafy greens such as kale, collards, spinach and mustard greens. You can also go for reds as well as oranges like carrots, tomatoes, red peppers, and sweet potatoes as well. All of these have rich vitamins.

What is also important is to have breakfast, and there are plenty of foods that you can make quick and easy. For one, eggs are a great option as they too have a variety of nutrients in them. They’re pretty quick to make too–you can even microwave a beaten egg, break it up, and have scrambled eggs in about a minute. Another simple breakfast solution is having fruit available, as fruits can stave back sugar cravings, and are often easy to grab and go.

Some other ways to improve health is to limit yourself to certain foods as well. Some of them are healthy but can be counterproductive when consumed frequently while some you want to restrict or eliminate. Foods to monitor would be foods that have fats and oils in them. Examples of these foods would be of course cooking oil but other sources of fat are foods like avocado, nuts, seeds, and fish. While those are healthy, if you consume a lot of it, it may be counterproductive if you are trying to lose weight. Foods that you want to restrict or eliminate are foods and drinks that are high in sugar or are processed.

Lastly, there are foods that should be generally avoided. Some of the culprits are foods that sweetened with sugar, desserts, fats that can solidify such as shortening, and white bread, white rice, and pasta that’s made from refined grains. The big reason is those foods contain a lot of calories and don’t provide a lot of nutrients to us. Thankfully by this point, there are many healthier alternatives to these types of foods. Examples are whole wheat bread, brown rice or whole grain pasta, ghee, and of course fruits and low-sugar snacks. Making these switches can be tricky, but gradual changes can make a huge impact on your health.
