The new year can be a great way to kickstart positive, life-improving changes – that’s why New Year’s resolutions exist. Of course, as anyone who’s ever set a resolution knows, these goals can be difficult to maintain throughout the year. However, there are simple resolutions you can keep up all year long, and below are seven that you can start now.

1. Drink more water

A New Year’s resolution to drink more water is a simple, maintainable way to improve your health and overall happiness. A recent study of 2,000 Americans found that participants who drank more water describe themselves as happier than people who drank less water. Additionally, the study found that the average respondent drinks about five glasses per day, whereas health experts recommend drinking eight glasses of water per day.

2. Moisturize

Although a new year has come, you can keep a youthful look by regularly moisturizing your skin. Face moisturizers, body lotions, lip balms, and even a humidifier are essential products for maintaining a healthy, youthful glow in the new year.

3. Join a book club to read more

When you read more books, you can discover new books you’ve never heard of and gain a new perspective by reading stories from unique voices. Additionally, if you join a virtual book club or sign up for a monthly book subscription box, you can meet new people virtually and discuss your favorite new reads.

4. Create a cleaning schedule

The new year can be a chance for better productivity, starting with a tidier home. Instead of cleaning once a week for hours on end, try implementing a few daily cleaning tasks to keep your home tidy in the new year. You can also set time for deeper cleaning via a weekly, monthly, or bi-monthly cleaning schedule. If you work from home, decluttering your office space can also improve your productivity.

5. Reduce stress

Stress can be destructive to your relationships, health, and overall well being, so naturally, if you reduce your stress levels, you’ll have an easier life. When the going gets tough, simple activities such as watching a funny movie, going outside, or taking a nice hot bath can help reduce your stress levels and make you happier.

6. Take more walks

According to a 2011 study published in the scientific journal Nutritional Research, approximately 40 percent of Americans suffer from vitamin D deficiency, which is linked to several health issues such as headaches and low energy levels. The easiest way to make sure you’re getting enough vitamin D and thus counter these issues is to go out for a walk.

Walking is a great low-intensity exercise, and with just a 15-minute walk during midday hours, you can improve your health. If you have a darker complexion, a 20 to 30-minute walk will be more beneficial to get the proper amount of vitamin D.

7. Cook more

Cooking at home more often will save you some money on restaurant meals and allow you to impress friends by cooking for them. If you don’t like to cook, looking at some inspiring recipes can help to motivate you. Even the simplest of home-cooked meals are great for saving money on ordering food – and thus having more money for other purposes – in the new year.
