One unusual development in the world of business and tech has sprung up over the last few weeks, as two big tech CEOs have challenged each other to a cage fight. This unheard of story sees Twitter CEO Elon Musk and Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg potentially being pitted against each other in a mixed martial arts match. Will this fight actually happen? Read on below to find out.

How did this start?

Mark Zuckerberg’s company Meta announced recently that they’re developing a project called “Threads”, which will reportedly be a competitor to Twitter. When Musk replied to a tweet about the news, one fan replied with “Better be careful @elonmusk I heard he [Zuckerberg] does the ju jitsu now.” In response to this, Musk said “I’m up for a cage match if he is lol,” which is what sparked this whole conversation.

In an Instagram story addressing the message, Zuckerberg said “Send the location.” Musk replied with “Vegas Octagon. I have this great move that I call ‘The Walrus’ where I just lie on top of my opponent & do nothing.”

Zuckerberg’s Jiu-Jitsu training

Mark Zuckerberg is known to have been practicing Jiu-Jitsu since at least September of last year. He won two medals, a gold and a silver, in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament held at a Silicon Valley high school in May 2023. Zuckerberg is 5’7” and weighs approximately 155 lbs, and has fought as a white belt lightweight in the past. Many commenters have said they’d put their money on Zuckerberg to win, despite his small size, since he already has some martial arts training.

Does Elon Musk have any MMA experience?

Up to this point it seems Elon Musk has little or no martial arts or MMA experience, but he does have a significant size advantage as he alluded to in his joke. Musk stands at 6’1” and roughly 180 lbs, which could make a big difference in a potential fight. Musk recently accepted an offer to be trained by Georges St. Pierre, widely agreed to be one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time.

The UFC’s response

The UFC is the largest mixed martial arts promotion in the world, and its president Dana White has expressed interest in the Musk versus Zuckerberg fight becoming a reality. White told Fox Sports, “This isn’t a gimmick fight… This is a fight between two of the most powerful richest guys in the world. Who will win? Who has seen this before? NOBODY. It’s also a crossover fight that literally EVERYONE will watch.”

Will there actually be a fight?

But with all that being said, will there actually be a fight? It’s hard to tell, but it seems like it could actually happen. Both Musk and Zuckerberg have been photographed training Jiu-Jitsu and MMA in recent weeks, and both of them even spent time practicing with podcaster Lex Fridman, a machine learning researcher who has interviewed both men and coincidentally also holds a Jiu-Jitsu black belt.
