Jaws (1975)

For a fan of thriller movies, and if you’re not planning on swimming too much this summer, Jaws is a summer classic that you need to watch if you haven’t yet. The movie was the highest-grossing film of all time when it was released, and it signifies a major moment in the history of film.

Jaws depicts the residents of a summer resort town as they try to catch a great white shark following a series of chilling attacks. From visual effects ahead of its time to the iconic eerie soundtrack, Jaws is a summer movie that can’t be beat.

The Sandlot (1993)

You can’t have a list of great summer movies without mentioning the comedy classic The Sandlot. This coming-of-age baseball comedy tells the story of a group of LA kids in the 1960s and is always a fun watch for all ages.  

Field of Dreams (1989)

For a more serious take on a summer baseball movie, the 1989 film Field of Dreams is always worth a watch. Featuring Kevin Costner and James Earl Jones, this film follows farmer Ray Kinsella as he builds a baseball field that attracts the ghosts of baseball legends to his farm.

The Karate Kid (1984) and Cobra Kai (2018- )

The iconic 1984 movie The Karate Kid started a franchise that now includes five movies, an animated TV show, and the award-winning 2018 TV series Cobra Kai. The Karate Kid is a martial arts drama film about a young boy named Daniel LaRusso who learns karate to join a tournament and defend himself against high-school bullies.

If you’ve already seen The Karate Kid but haven’t watched Cobra Kai yet, this summer is a perfect time to start! The new series focuses on Johnny Lawrence, Daniel LaRusso’s long-time rival, as he reopens the infamous Cobra Kai Dojo to earn redemption and prove who’s the better martial artist. This popular show is preparing to start its fifth season in September.

Elvis (2022)

A perfect movie for this summer and future summers is this year’s film Elvis, chronicling the life of legendary rock and roll star Elvis Presley. The long-awaited movie quickly became the second best-selling music biopic of all time, just behind the 2018 movie Bohemian Rhapsody. 

Elvis stars Austin Butler as Presley himself, and he received a large amount of critical acclaim and praise from fans for his highly accurate portrayal of “The King,” including recreations of several iconic Elvis performances with Austin Butler actually singing. Whether a fan of Elvis or not, this movie is definitely one worth watching in summer 2022 or in the future.
