If you’re one of the 154 million people who have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, then you’ve received a vaccination card, but you might not know what exactly you should do with your card. Worse yet, you might be worried about losing your card. Below, learn all the recommended practices for COVID vaccine cards.

Photograph your card but don’t share it

Experts recommend that, after you receive a dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, you photograph both sides of your COVID-19 vaccination record card. If you don’t want to take a picture of your card, you can also scan it and save the file on your computer. If you lose your physical vaccination card, at least you’ll have a digital version in your possession.

However, you shouldn’t share your vaccination card on Facebook or other social media sites. The vaccination card includes your first name and last name, as well as your date of birth. Sharing your vaccination card will make you vulnerable to identity theft and strangers using your identity for nefarious reasons.

Keep the original at home

Unless you’re going to the doctor or traveling to a country that requires proof of vaccination, you don’t need to carry your vaccination card on a daily basis. Instead, keep your card somewhere safe in your house or apartment as you do with your other important documents. You can store your vaccination card in a file cabinet or beside your passport. By keeping your vaccination card safe at home, you can reduce your chances of losing it.

Contact your city or state health department

If you lose your COVID-19 vaccination card, you can contact your state health department or vaccine provider for a replacement. However, it’s important to know that replacing your vaccination card could take several days. The process might take a while because your personal information will need to be verified.

Luckily, if you do lose your card and you’ve only had one dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine, you’ll be issued a second card at your next vaccine appointment. Just remember to bring any necessary forms of identification to your second appointment and let them know you lost your card.

Don’t laminate your card

Although a few office supply stores are offering free lamination for COVID-19 vaccine cards, it’s better not to laminate them. The heat from laminating machines might damage the ink on the card.

Additionally, if public health experts and immunologists recommend COVID vaccine booster shots in the future, laminating your vaccine card can make it difficult to mark. If you want to protect your card, put it in a clear plastic sleeve or a badge ID holder. Alternatively, you can make a copy of your vaccine card and laminate the copy while keeping the original unlaminated.
