Four Holiday Staycation Ideas

If you’re snowed in, have time off from work, or can’t leave your house for other reasons, you might worry that you’ll get bored. That wouldn’t quite be correct – if anything, there are countless ways to make the most of your time while you’re on a staycation. So, what exactly can you do at home while it’s cold outside? Here are four staycation ideas during the holidays.

1. Make a family recipe

Whether you want to be a better cook or you already love cooking, making a new family recipe is a fun and delicious way to spend your time at home during the holidays. You can invent your own tasty Thanksgiving recipe or creative hot chocolate recipe. There are many holiday recipes available online, and you can add your favorite ingredients and spices to make your culinary creations more exciting.

If you’re in the mood to make a family recipe you can enjoy all-year-round, make a spin on a quattro formaggi pasta recipe (or four-cheese pasta). You can use regular pasta or gluten-free noodles according to your dietary preferences. Add Parmesan, fontina cheese, cream cheese, and ricotta to your four-cheese recipe. Pair your delicious Italian dish with a glass of Italian wine and enjoy.

2. Have a movie marathon

Binge-watching some new and your favorite movies is always a fun activity when it’s cold outside. If you’re not alone, watch some movies with your roommates, friends, family, or partner. If you have a movie-watching partner that isn’t nearby, have a virtual streaming party from the comfort of your home while you’re on your staycation.

3. Build your at-home gym

It’s important to stay healthy, but as it gets colder, walking to the gym and exercising outside can be more difficult (if not just plain unfun). That said, during the holidays, especially around Thanksgiving, you may find yourself eating more than usual and thus wanting to burn off the calories. Most people’s workout routines fluctuate due to environmental factors, so to combat this issue, make a small at-home gym with just a small amount of workout equipment.

For easy at-home exercise, many people swear by high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts and high-volume interval training (HVIT). HIIT workouts require you to exercise at a faster and higher intensity than HVIT workouts, but you should do them at most twice a week so your body can fully recover. For a productive HIIT workout routine, you can get a jump rope, weights, a fitness mat, or splurge on a treadmill depending on your at-home gym budget.

If you want to exercise at a lower intensity and thus have a quicker recovery time, you may prefer an HVIT workout routine. If you go the HVIT route, all you will need is a set of weights, a jump rope, and a yoga mat.

4. Host a virtual game night

If you like having virtual movie-viewing parties, why not have fun hosting a virtual game night during your staycation as well? It’s easy to have a virtual game night with a video call service and your favorite games. Board games, card games, and party games can quickly liven up your time at home while connecting you with your loved ones when it’s cold outside.
